About BATJ

The British Association for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language (BATJ) was formed in March 1998, with the aim of encouraging and promoting Japanese language education in the U.K., particularly by stimulating teaching and encouraging research in the field of language studies as an academic discipline. The Association's first conference was held in London in September 1998, at the Japan Foundation Nihongo Centre which co-hosted the conference. The Association admits individuals supporting its aims. The fiscal year starts from 1st October. The BATJ Constitution is available from "Downloads".

The activities of the BATJ include

1.

Holding an annual conference for the presentation of current research papers and to provide a forum for exchanging ideas. Conferences are held at the end of summer/before the autumn term in September.
2.
Organising seminars and workshops in the field of Japanese language teaching and learning. Most workshops and seminars are open to non-members.
3. Establishing a network of teachers.
4. Gathering and disseminating information on Japanese language teaching and learning in the UK higher education system.
5. Publishing newsletters and an annual journal. BATJ membership includes newsletters and a copy of BATJ Journal.
6. eBATJ: BATJ members are networked via the eBATJ mailing list.

Guidelines for the Use of e-BATJ

Requesting the assistance of other BATJ members with one's research

As a rule, members should only request assistance with their own research. Otherwise, assistance should only be requested via other members if it is likely to contribute to the teaching of Japanese as a foreign language. Members should follow the principle of mutual benefit (e.g., by means of their journal contributions).
(Approved at BATJ's 2010 annual general meeting)
